Sex and the City

A few years late, I've just discovered Sex and the City.  I've acquired all the episodes on iTunes and will probably wait a couple of months for the movie to come out on a downloadable format.

This show came out on HBO in 1998, and it simply was not on my radar at the time.  For one thing, I was a rather staid suburban married woman in 1998.  For another thing, we did not have the money for premium cable channels, so there was no HBO in my house.

My older daughter says I am a Charlotte.  If not for the great difference in our socio-economic classes, I would have to say that this character does in fact have the most in common with the real-life me.  Our values are quite similar.  And honestly, I think she is the sweetest and cutest one of the four.

But dang, sometimes I wish I were a Carrie.

Another clip

This is one of my favorite choir pieces.  My choir sang this at my husband's funeral in 2000.  The words of the song are a comfort to me.

For Outlaw and others

Sorry about the delay, and sorry about the bad video quality, but here you go.  This clip is representative of how we sounded on that night.  I'm the dark-haired blur, second from the left, about 3 rows back.

getting unstuck

Step by step, I'm getting unstuck.  I'm doing the Woman Challenge.  Basically it's a way to add fun and motivation to a daily exercise habit.  I think men can join too, though honestly, I don't see the need.  My observation is that men feel much more entitled to taking the time for exercise than women do.  I've never heard a man say, "I'd love to go for a walk now, but I have to get the laundry folded and start dinner."

Feeling stuck lately.  Time for a road trip.

crossing market street

I had a dream I was back in the city, crossing Market Street, wearing a pair of red stretch pants, a fur coat, and a cowboy hat, and dodging little wiener dogs who yipped at my feet.

Dang, girl.

nearly eight years

It's nearly eight years since the day my husband died.  There are still times when I miss him, but mostly it's sadness on behalf of my kids, for the daddy they no longer have.

Like when my boyfriend gets an e-mail from his daughter asking for help on some school paper.  Or when my boss leaves the office to go pick up his daughter from the airport.  When I see men walking in the park with their kids.  Those are the times when I really miss him.

the black shirt rebellion

Palm Sunday morning.  I am wearing black corduroy pants and a black sweater set.  Black over black, over black.  I have joined the Black Shirt Rebellion.

It began, appropriately enough, in the Bass section.  One Sunday morning, half the guys showed up in black shirts, flaunting my choir director's standing orders that we were to wear white shirts over black pants.

That had been the standard choir dress code for the past few years.  White tops over black bottoms.  Those of us who do not normally buy white shirts have had to purchase a suitable number of white tops in order to conform to the code.

The Black Shirt Rebellion began shortly after I saw the DVD version of "Walk the Line," the movie biography of Johnny Cash, so I was already enchanted with the idea of wearing all black.  The fact that I am not a manly-man Bass but a girly-girl Soprano, well, that just makes it kind of funny.

Life often hands you opportunities for comedy.  It's up to you whether or not you choose to take them.

the cafe in my mind

Or maybe I need to find the cafe in my mind, the one with the outside courtyard, where it's always sunny but the tables are shaded.  There is always a clean table just for me.  I can have crab louis and iced tea and watch the birds fly towards the bay.  This is where I want to spend my lunch break.

right now

Sometimes, all a girl needs is a quiet place in the office to eat her salad and FunYuns.

That's all I need right now.
